For some time I have been volunteering for Wise Thoughts which creates dynamic local, national and international arts initiatives in addition is delivering services that help address social justice issues for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI+) and Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.
I didn’t want to work for free for some corporation while still learning so this is a cause with meaning.
For this post I posting a bi-fold brochure for this charity and placards which will be taken to the pride itself.
I think in real life it looks lot better.
With the placards is important to keep the message clear and easy to read.
I was asked by the charity I occasionally do some graphic design for to create a posters for Mindfulness and Knitting sessions.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an approach to psychotherapy that was originally created as a relapse-prevention treatment for depression. Research indicates that it may be particularly effective for individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD).
Benefits of knitting for your brain
Knitting exercises both hemispheres of the brain.
Knitting improves mood.
It improves your motor skills.
Knitting raises self esteem.
I do practice mindfulness myself, but not knitting. I have to be honest I can’t knit. Maybe one day I will try.
The designs below are the ones I came up with.
I have tried different fonts and played with different backgrounds, but the image above is my favourite.
The yellow colours is somehow very welcoming.
In case of the mindfulness poster I struggled a little as it is very hard to define. I practice it every morning, but I still find it hard what it is and how I would explain to someone what I am doing every morning.
This example is quite straight forward, but I would’t say it exactly explains what is one doing.
I am doing this work for residents of protected housing and to sit like the person on the image takes a lot of practice and some might have a physical difficulties and etc. The next example is much more forgiving.
I wanted these posters to be very simple and very straight forward.
This example above is probably my most favourite. While creating this I was thinking that when one closes eyes everything kind of loses edges like this flower here.
A spring has definitely arrived, which is delightful. For this post I have decided to create a poster for The Chelsea Flower Show.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, formally known as the Great Spring Show,[ is a garden show held for five days in May by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London. Held at Chelsea since 1912, it is the most famous flower and landscape gardens show in the United Kingdom, and perhaps in the world. The show is attended by members of the British Royal Family and attracts visitors from all continents.
Highlights to the Chelsea Flower Show include the avant-garde show gardens designed by leading names with Floral Marquee at the centerpiece. The Show also features smaller gardens such as the Artisan and Urban Gardens.
At the moment I am in favour of vintage look. I create this poster from flowers illustrations not from the real photos.
I wanted to give more style option. I have created some variations in the style. Here I am using photographs.
After watching a trailer on RHS website featuring interviews with the participants of the show. I decided that a sharp angles are not always the best.
One of the topics of this year how is gargening for well being. This idea told of one of the gardeners to create something which would let the visitors to explore the garden more intuitively rather through designed paths I have created few more versions of my poster.
The colour used for the background of the posters are always colour picked from the photos. I am aiming for colour harmony.
The challenge here is to create something with text and photos without either of them overpowering the other one. I also didn’t want too many photos which would disturb the simplicity of the poster. I also struggled with placements of the logos. I resolved the issue by placing them on bottom right side.
The Chelsea Flower show is very visual and I feel photos are very important part of the poster. I felt I have to include those and they need to be relatively big in size.
Over all I am happy with my designs and might do more later on.
This new post is about a poster I had to create for Healthy Lunch Club. I had to complete this task very quickly so I had no time to spare.
The general idea was to create something quite simple and interesting. These are the ideas I came up with.
It is for a protected housing association with limited budget for printing and so I couldn’t go very crazy with colors.
The color palette I have used had been colour picked from the photographs. I prefer this method I don’t want something over shouting the photographs I wanted something to complement the images and supporting them, help them shine. Before I started I have done some basic online research based on the same theme.
The software used is Adobe InDesign, which I found ideal with this kind of work. The font used is Lato I interchanged it using Bold or Regular to help attract the attention between the text highlighting the most important information.
To start with I was using circles shapes for the individual photographs, but later I have decided to change it to rectangles as with the circles I was cropping the image
and for the food it might be better to display as mach as is possible.
With this idea I had to change the overall look as the previous setup wouldn’t work.
I also rethought the order of the photograph and changed it from horizontal to vertical as that seem more natural how to display menu , from starter to desert.
I hope the organisation will be happy with results of my work/designs and their costumers will enjoy the meal too.
Above you can see the other versions I did. Below you can read about the main dish.
The most popular theory about Valentine’s Day’s origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn’t want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the jailor’s daugter signing it “from your Valentine”.
I have decided to continue with the Valentine’s theme. I have created these Cocktail Party posters to offer an option and practice my Adobe Illustrator skills.
I wanted to create something as cute as possible.
Or you could pop over to Finland where Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s day”. It’s more about remembering your buddies than your loved ones.
Some interesting facts about St Valentine’s day
In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card. I would be annoyed if my cards was anonymous.
Based on retail statistics, about 3 per cent of pet owners will give gifts to their pets on this day. That is funny one.
About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year. This makes it the second largest seasonal card sending time of the year
If you’re single don’t despair. You can celebrate Singles Awareness Day (SAD) instead. That certainly helps.
Meant as an alternative to Valentine’s Day, the holiday is for single people to celebrate or to commiserate in their single status.
For this post I wanted to create a poster for science fiction movie. I found this tutorial on YouTube so I decided to follow it. It is not the same as the original, but I dried my best.
I am adding a link on YouTube so you can see for yourselves.
Metropolis, German silent film, released in 1927, featuring director Fritz Lang’s vision of a grim futuristic society and containing some of the most impressive images in film history.
The great future city of Metropolis in the film is inhabited by two distinct classes: the industrialists live off the fat of the land, supported by the workers who live under the city and endure a bare-bones existence of backbreaking work. The story concerns a forbidden love between Freder (played by Gustav Fröhlich), a young man from the industrialist class, and Maria (Brigitte Helm), an activist who preaches against the divide between the two classes. The subterfuge and deceit involving a robot duplicate of Maria culminate in a revolution that quickly spells disaster for all involved.
Despite advances in film making technology, no other film has surpassed Metropolis in terms of its impact on production design. Its influence can be seen in many subsequent science fiction films, including Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982) and Terry Gilliam’sBrazil (1985). Lang’s eye for magnificent set pieces and special effects resulted in memorable images, notably the immense skyscrapers that dominate the skyline of Metropolis and the scenes in which the robot takes on Maria’s features.(From left) Alfred Abel, Brigitte Helm, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge, in Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang, 1927.From a private collectionMetropolisBrigitte Helm in Metropolis (1927), directed by Fritz Lang. From a private collection
Metropolis was not a success in its initial German release. It was cut by about a quarter from its original length of 153 minutes for its American release and a German release. These shortened versions were further reedited many times over the decades, and various versions exist in different countries. For example, in 1984 an 87-minute print was released with a rock sound track constructed by composer Giorgio Moroder. The original 1927 release print seemed lost forever, but in 2008 a deteriorated but nearly complete print that ran 147 minutes was discovered in the archives of the Museum of Cinema in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After several months of restoration in Germany, the reconstructed Metropolis had its first showing at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2010.
I am completely unmusical person and any type activity where I would have to sing would be a torture for me. That said nothing is stopping me from creating a music poster.
I have tried to research why I can’t sing and other people can and below is why.
It also found that roughly 20 percent of people can’t sing
accurately because they don’t have good control of their vocal muscles.
Another 35 percent of poor singers have trouble matching the pitch of
their own voice to the same sound heard in other timbres, such as when
it’s coming from a trumpet, piano, or a person of the opposite sex. And 5
percent of lousy singers lack the ability to hear differences in pitch
or discriminate between two different sounds.
To be sure, some aspects of singing are influenced by genetics. “There are certainly people who are more natural singers, and the physiological shape of their vocal tracts can give a more or less pleasing natural sound to the voice,” Hutchins points out. But he says, the best singers just like the best athletes will be those who are blessed with natural talent and have devoted a large amount of practice to their craft.
I am aware practice makes perfect, but in my case it won’t be singing.
