Mindfulness & Knitting Sessions

I was asked by the charity I occasionally do some graphic design for to create a posters for Mindfulness and Knitting sessions.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an approach to psychotherapy that was originally created as a relapse-prevention treatment for depression. Research indicates that it may be particularly effective for individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Benefits of knitting for your brain

  1. Knitting exercises both hemispheres of the brain.
  2. Reduces stress.
  3. Knitting improves mood.
  4. It improves your motor skills.
  5. Knitting raises self esteem.

I do practice mindfulness myself, but not knitting. I have to be honest I can’t knit. Maybe one day I will try.

The designs below are the ones I came up with.

I have tried different fonts and played with different backgrounds, but the image above is my favourite.

The yellow colours is somehow very welcoming.

In case of the mindfulness poster I struggled a little as it is very hard to define. I practice it every morning, but I still find it hard what it is and how I would explain to someone what I am doing every morning.

This example is quite straight forward, but I would’t say it exactly explains what is one doing.

I am doing this work for residents of protected housing and to sit like the person on the image takes a lot of practice and some might have a physical difficulties and etc. The next example is much more forgiving.

I wanted these posters to be very simple and very straight forward.

This example above is probably my most favourite. While creating this I was thinking that when one closes eyes everything kind of loses edges like this flower here.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show poster

A spring has definitely arrived, which is delightful. For this post I have decided to create a poster for The Chelsea Flower Show.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, formally known as the Great Spring Show,[ is a garden show held for five days in May by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London. Held at Chelsea since 1912, it is the most famous flower and landscape gardens show in the United Kingdom, and perhaps in the world. [1] The show is attended by members of the British Royal Family and attracts visitors from all continents.

Highlights to the Chelsea Flower Show include the avant-garde show gardens designed by leading names with Floral Marquee at the centerpiece. The Show also features smaller gardens such as the Artisan and Urban Gardens.

At the moment I am in favour of vintage look. I create this poster from flowers illustrations not from the real photos.

I wanted to give more style option. I have created some variations in the style. Here I am using photographs.

After watching a trailer on RHS website featuring interviews with the participants of the show. I decided that a sharp angles are not always the best.

One of the topics of this year how is gargening for well being. This idea told of one of the gardeners to create something which would let the visitors to explore the garden more intuitively rather through designed paths I have created few more versions of my poster.

The colour used for the background of the posters are always colour picked from the photos. I am aiming for colour harmony.

The challenge here is to create something with text and photos without either of them overpowering the other one. I also didn’t want too many photos which would disturb the simplicity of the poster. I also struggled with placements of the logos. I resolved the issue by placing them on bottom right side.

The Chelsea Flower show is very visual and I feel photos are very important part of the poster. I felt I have to include those and they need to be relatively big in size.

Over all I am happy with my designs and might do more later on.

Beauty products advert

For this post I have decide to continue with my packaging theme. I have the products, but I need to advertise them. I have created some mock-up adverts which would go into magazine or something similar.

Everything had been created using Adobe Photoshop.

After posting the advert I discovered I can still improve so I changed the paragraph to justify last left and also made the bottle bit darker.

Art is always work in progress and I see the design in a same way.

Now the real thing, the actual magazine.

Anthophila is scientific name for a bee.

The Honey bee is probably the best-known bee around, but over 270 species of bee have been recorded in Great Britain. Honey bees and bumblebees live socially, led by a queen and serviced by male drones and female worker bees.

Solitary bees tend to be smaller and their family unit is made up of a single pair. Although lots of solitary bees can be found in one area, they operate alone. Bumblebees are distinguished by their large furry bodies and species include the black and-yellow striped Garden bumblebee and Red-tailed bumblebee. Solitary bees include mason bees, leaf-cutter bees and mining bees. The Wool-carder bee strips hair from plants to weave its nest, while the Red mason bee lives inside hollow plant stems and holes in wood.

Since 1900, the UK has lost 13 species of bee, and a further 35 are considered under threat of extinction. None are protected by law. Across Europe nearly 1 in 10 wild bee species face extinction.

The outlook for bees right now is quite bleak – and their drop in numbers is a sign of the plight of the natural world as a whole. Across society, we often undervalue nature and what it does for us. The truth is, if we want an economy that provides for everyone’s needs in the long term, we need to look after our natural environment. Our politicians need to understand the importance of protecting the natural world – and protecting bees as key players in it. We’re optimistic we can make a difference – see what you’ve already helped us achieve so far.

Healthy Lunch Club Poster

This new post is about a poster I had to create for Healthy Lunch Club. I had to complete this task very quickly so I had no time to spare.

The general idea was to create something quite simple and interesting. These are the ideas I came up with.

It is for a protected housing association with limited budget for printing and so I couldn’t go very crazy with colors.

The color palette I have used had been colour picked from the photographs. I prefer this method I don’t want something over shouting the photographs I wanted something to complement the images and supporting them, help them shine. Before I started I have done some basic online research based on the same theme.

The software used is Adobe InDesign, which I found ideal with this kind of work. The font used is Lato I interchanged it using Bold or Regular to help attract the attention between the text highlighting the most important information.

To start with I was using circles shapes for the individual photographs, but later I have decided to change it to rectangles as with the circles I was cropping the image

and for the food it might be better to display as mach as is possible.

With this idea I had to change the overall look as the previous setup wouldn’t work.

I also rethought the order of the photograph and changed it from horizontal to vertical as that seem more natural how to display menu , from starter to desert.

I hope the organisation will be happy with results of my work/designs and their costumers will enjoy the meal too.

Above you can see the other versions I did. Below you can read about the main dish.

Cachupa (Portuguese pronunciation: [kɐˈʃupɐ], Cape Verdean CreoleKatxupa IPA: [kɐˈʧupɐ]) is a famous dish from the Cape Verde islands, West Africa. This slow cooked stew of corn (hominy), beans, cassava, sweet potato, fish or meat (sausage, beef, goat or chicken) is often referred to as the country’s national dish. Each island has its own regional variation. The version of the recipe called cachupa rica tends to have more ingredients than the simpler, cachupa pobre.

Music Therapy Poster

In this post I am showing my ideas of music poster designs. Promoted activity is meant for clients of residential homes overcoming mental illnesses or dealing with problems in their lives.

Listening to music and/or having sing-alongs with seniors can trigger thoughts and memories that can help them heal. Often, seniors who struggle with dementia or other cognitive disorders have a very difficult time trying to find the words they want to use, or they may know the words but can’t remember how to use it in context. Music has a way of helping seniors in this category by triggering memories or recalling how certain words are used in context. They may hear a certain song and want to dance, even! Naturally, physical movement is important for overall health, so let them dance the night away!

Overall, music can play a vital role in helping seniors cope with loss and other stressors. Memory loss can be the most frustrating parts of facing dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, but music allows seniors to recognize a song and remember just where they were when they first heard it. Or, they may hear a song and instantly be drawn back to a certain event, such as their wedding or the birth of a child, etc.

Music therapy can help people with a range of emotional disorders and mental illness and can impact fundamentally on the way people live their lives.

Christmas Party Poster

I was thinking about wanting to create a Christmas Poster for a little while. Now I have finally done one. I really enjoy designing ans creating posters so this time of a year I see as great opportunity for creating one.

I am sure I will be doing more.

Windrush Scandal Call for Artist

Why I am posting this? I am volunteering for the Rebel Radio and been working on these posters for some time. I wanted to offer a background to this work. The artworks shown on the posters are done by artists who are connected to the Windrush generation.

I can’t take ownership over the text as I copied it from Wikipedia.

The artworks featuring bellow are by https://www.instagram.com/dannyf_the_artsloth/

Rachelle Romeo called “Identity”

The Windrush scandal is a 2018 British political scandal concerning people who were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation, and, in around 63 cases, wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office. Many of those affected had been born British subjects and had arrived in the UK before 1973, particularly from Caribbean countries as members of the Windrush generation.

As well as those who were wrongly deported, an unknown number were wrongly detained, lost their jobs or homes, or were denied benefits or medical care to which they were entitled. A number of long-term UK residents were wrongly refused re-entry to the UK, and a larger number were threatened with immediate deportation by the Home Office.

Linked by commentators to the “hostile environment policy” instituted by Theresa May during her time as Home Secretary, the scandal led to the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Secretary in April 2018, and the appointment of Sajid Javid as her successor. The scandal also prompted a wider debate about British immigration policy and Home Office practice.

The scandal came to public attention as a result of a campaign mounted by Caribbean diplomats to the UK, British parliamentarians and charities, and an extended series of articles in The Guardian newspaper.

The British Nationality Act 1948 gave citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies status, and the right to settle in the UK, to everyone who was at that time a British subject by virtue of having been born in a British colony. The act, and encouragement from British Government campaigns in Caribbean countries, led to a wave of immigration from the Caribbean. Between 1948 and 1970 nearly half a million people moved from the Caribbean to Britain, which in 1948 faced severe labour shortages in the wake of the Second World War. These immigrants were later referred to as “the Windrush generation”. In addition to working age adults, many children travelled from the Caribbean to join parents or grandparents in the UK, or travelled with their parents, without their own passports.

Since these people had a legal right to come to the UK, they neither needed nor were given any documents upon entry to the UK, nor following changes in immigration laws in the early 1970s. Some worked – or attended schools in the UK, without any official documentary record of their having done so, other than the same records as any UK-born citizen.

Many of the countries from which the immigrants had come, became independent of the UK after 1948, and therefore people then living there became citizens of those countries. Additionally, a series of legislative measures in the 1960s and early 1970s limited the rights of citizens of these former colonies, now members of the Commonwealth, to come to, or work in the UK. However, anyone who had arrived in the UK from a Commonwealth country before 1973 was granted an automatic right to permanently remain, unless they left the UK for more than two years. Since the right was automatic, many people in this category were never given, or asked to provide, documentary evidence of their right to remain either at that time, or in the following four decades, during which many continued to live and work in the UK, believing themselves to be British.

A clause in the 1999 Immigration Act specifically protected longstanding residents of the UK from Commonwealth countries from enforced removal. The clause was not transferred to 2014 immigration legislation. The clause was removed as Commonwealth citizens living in the UK before 1 January 1973 were “adequately protected from removal”, according to a Home Office spokesperson.

Grimm’s tale made into movie poster

I have created this poster using Adobe Photoshop. I wanted something quite grim as I have learned some new tricks in Adobe Photoshop and wanted to test them. I have created a horror movie, drama and thriller, but not fairy tale and the Grimm’s works seemed perfect.

The Twin Brothers is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, tale number 60. It is Arne-Thompson type 567A, the magic bird heart, and type 303, the blood brothers.

two-brothers

After creating this grim poster I suddenly interested if the word grim is some how related to the Grimm Brothers. Here is what I have found.

Two famous uses of the adjective grim are the Grim Reaper and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Mr. Reaper shows up in movies and books wearing a long, hooded black cape and carrying a scythe, or long-handled blade used, in less grim circumstances, for mowing grass and reaping grain: he represents death. The real-life German brothers wrote some bone-chilling tales under their own name, Grimm, meaning “cruel, fierce,” which is related to the English word grim. Modern grim things include crime-drama images of dead bodies and characters in horror movies.

Promoting healthy life poster

I have created this poster using Adobe Photoshop. I wanted to try something else as I think the food industry is getting more and more prominent.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health. Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke.

I see the quote above as extremely valid.

salad-poster-green

This is my green version above. The table itself doesn’t strike as very healthy colour, but I like the colour combination.

salad-poster-brown

Above is I think better version of the same thing. I haven’t tried to prepare the salad on the picture, but I am adding link to the website where you can get the recipe.
